August Wilson's Fences
March 18th 2008 02:47
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize; four Tony awards (including Best Play); three Drama Desk Awards and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, FENCES is the second installment of August Wilson's extraordinary ten play cycle exploring the African-American experience in each decade of the 20th century.
The story tells a powerful family drama about Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues, who is working as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Seeing the world composed mostly of fences which enclose him, he harbors bitterness because he was excluded from major league baseball while in his prime. His son Cory has an opportunity for an athletic scholarship, but Troy refuses to let him try his luck in the sports world. Not all the fences in his life are caused by society, as this unforgettable story of love, ambition and a changing world unfolds. Some of life's lessons remain unlearned while others are poignantly understood.
